The first Jørbæk candles were made in 1970. It
all began when a classified advertisement in the local newspaper offered for sale one
kilogram of paraffin wax, 10 meters of wick and a rubber candle mould. The idea was for
people to make their own inexpensive candles for Christmas. And that was how Jørbæk
Design's candle production started - in the kitchen of the family home. The candles
were quickly sold to friends and acquaintances and before long several shops on the
islands of Ærø and Fyn displayed Jørbæk candles on their shelves.
From kitchen to factory
The family kitchen soon became to small and production was transferred to the garage,
with stocks stored in a bedroom and the livingroom serving as the packaging department. At
that time, there was just one employee.
A 200 m² factory was build just two years later, in 1972, by which the staff had
increased to three. Since then, the factory has been extended twice. Today, it covers an
area of 1,100 m² and 10 employees produce two million candles a year, with a large
proportion exported to other European countries.
A wide range of designs
Jørbæk produces candles in a wide range of designs. From tall, straight candles to
moulded candles in special shapes. These special candles are the very foundation of
Jørbæk's business. That is why we devote great effort to maintaining a constant flow of
new, unusual designs.
